In the summer of 2009, 20 students from Ghana and Nigeria traveled to the USA to participate in the Reading Across Continents program initiative which included the reading of the following books: Things Fall Apart, The Girl Who Can, and Copper Sun. These acclaimed authors: Chinua Achebe, Ama Ata Aidoo and Sharon Draper books were instrumental in facilitating the initial dialogue that ensued between students from Africa and the United States.

While in Washington DC, the students attended School Without Walls, a public high school in Washington DC where they were matched with program peers. Throughout their stay, these Literacy Ambassadors utilized the opportunity to engage in cross cultural dialogue where they became cognizant of the fact that they were more similar than different. As a result of this positive interaction and experience, these students collaborated on and wrote a book which was read to a group of third graders in the Washington DC School District.

A month later, 20 of the participating students from School Without Walls reciprocated by traveling to Africa. Ten of these students attended Achimota School in Ghana while the other 10 attended Loyola Jesuit College in Nigeria.

This site features blogs, photos and videos of the students during this inaugural cultural literacy exchange.

The ebook features stories by each of the participating students detailing the tremendous impact that this experience has had on their lives.
